Roads blocked at multiple locations in Gilgit Baltistan due to torrential rains

Road blocked Karakoram Highway Gilgit Baltistan

Roads, houses and crops are damaged due to three days torrential rain in Diamer, Astore and Gilgit district. Karakoram highway is blocked at multiple locations; vehicles are severely damaged due to landslide triggered by heavy rainfall. In Chilas flood relay enters into Wapda Colony Thor damaging the newly constructed houses. Karakoram Highway is blocked at Tatta Pani Chilas and Lal Padi Jaglot. The Khunjarab section of KKH is also blocked. FWO is working to restore the road.

Inspector General of Police Gilgit-Baltistan Muhammad Saeed Wazir has ordered the Tourist Police to assist the stranded passengers and tourists from other areas in crossing the sliding area and cooperate with the concerned authorities for road rehabilitation. In addition, tourist police in all districts and all police have been ordered to be alert to deal with any emergency situation.

Naltar valley road is also blocked due to heavy rainfall. While in Baltistan division Road to Ghanche and Kharmang were closed due to mudslide, which was cleared by Disaster Management Authority.

In Astore valley tourists and passengers are stranded on roads due to road blockade. Astore valley road is closed at more than 10 places. Heavy landslides have hampered the restoration of the Astor Road. According to District administration Astor, District Disaster Management Machinery will also be dispatched in the morning for the rehabilitation of Astor Valley Road. Imtiaz Ahmed, Assistant Director Disaster Management said that every effort will be made to restore Astor Valley Road and operations will be carried out to open the road from both side.

Road to Ishkoman was also blocked due to glacial lake outburst. Deputy Speaker GB Assembly reached Badsut Ishkuman to inspect the rehabilitation works in the flood-affected area. He directed immediate rehabilitation of the road, timely and equitable distribution of relief items and restoration of the infrastructure. He said that the flood victims should be shifted to safer places as soon as possible and provide shelter to them. He said that the provincial government would not leave the victims alone.
