PMD issued alert for Glacial Lake outburst in Hassanabad, Hunza

ISLAMABAD (INP): The Meteorological Department has issued an alert for the eruption of the Glacier Lake in the Hassanabad area of ​​Hunza at any time. The alert issued by the Meteorological Department said that the lake in Hassanabad Hunza is likely to erupt due to flooding. The glacial lake is likely to erupt this summer with rising temperatures. The next three to four weeks are crucial in this regard. The Meteorological Department has recommended installing an automatic weather station at Hassanabad Hunza.

Authorities said that water level and water discharge monitoring station should be installed on Shispar Glacier till the arrival of Hydro-Meteorological Equipment proposed by GLOF Project 2, besides immediate steps should be taken to ensure discharge of water from glacier lake for which hydraulic siphon technique should be used to minimize the potential risk of water leakage. According to the Meteorological Department, a technical team from the Meteorological Department will visit Hunza in the first week of March to install an automatic weather station on the lake. In this regard, the Meteorological Department has requested the Gilgit-Baltistan Disaster Management Authority (GBDMA) to provide a water level gauge.
